FOCUS ON: IT (Information Technology)
Many people may ask ‘what does IT have to do with development?’
Many people who have access to the internet lack the resources, budgets and training required to develop effective online communications. Many also rely on paper-based documentation, which uses many resources, staff as well as requiring storage, and cannot be easily shared with other agencies or even between departments of the same organisation.
IT assignments through the AYAD Program are designed to aid the Host Organisations (HOs) in developing their on and offline computer needs
Assignments can be anything from building a database, to designing a whole website with social media. Through improvements, HOs will be able to work more efficiently and communicate to a wider range of people, in some cases internationally.
One AYADs experience
Web developer Peter Reisz spent 12 months working with the Samoan Tourism Authority (STA) as a Website and Online Booking Coordinator through the AYAD Program. Peter’s role was diverse; he designed major updates to Samoa’s national tourism website, helped develop websites for the Teulia Festival (Samoa’s main annual cultural festival) and the Miss Samoa Pageant, and also trained staff in Photoshop and InDesign which lead to vast improvements in STA promotional newsletters. He also got to see much of Samoa’s beautiful countryside while on breaks from volunteering.
“The AYAD Program has definitely broadened my horizons, exposed me to many more aspects of the IT industry while also helping me narrow down my options,” Peter says. “It has also left me with a strong resume that is sure to help with future employment.”
